2.6.1     Whitespace

This is NOT the latest copy of this book; click here for the latest version.

Spaces, tabs, and new lines in between statements have no effect on how the code is executed. For example, this next script is the same as the previous script, even though it is laid out quite different:

<?php
    $name
= "Paul"; print "Your name is $name\n";

$name2 = $name; $age = 20;

    print
"Your name is $name2, and your age is $age\n";

    print
'Goodbye, $name!\n';
?>

It is generally recommended that you use whitespace to separate your code into clear blocks, so that it can almost be understood simply by visually inspecting the layout.

Note that most code samples in this book have had the majority of their whitespace characters removed to save as much space as possible - while this might make things a little harder to read, you get more value for money. Be happy!

I have found that with newer php, any whitepace at the end of an included file caused php to not render script.

I understand about whitespace in my scripts. But, when there is extra whitespace at the end of some of my files (config.php for example) my other scripts won't work properly.

the /n is relating to command line only, you have to use
<br /> wherever you want to put a whitespace.
