9.1.14     Round up

This is NOT the latest copy of this book; click here for the latest version.

Reading through the above you would be forgiven for wondering why this book focuses on the MySQL DBMS - there are quite a few features above that it does not have support for! It is true that other databases support the full set of features, but they do so at the cost of speed. Most web databases have no need for stored procedures or triggers, and by doing without them MySQL has been concentrated on being the fastest DBMS available. MySQL really is the ideal database for web databases, however it will expand into other areas more and more as the other features above get implemented.

PostgreSQL is another free license alternative, and has most (if not all) of the features MySQL lacks. It is also particularly fast.

for full feature set slated to be in MySQL 5.0, people can download the development snapshot if they want to play with the new features.

Hopefully, this book will be updated to reflect on those new features.

You might want to mention that MySQL is licensed in a way that it is totally free for most uses (dual-licensed, partly GPL), whereas Microsoft SQL Server and other DBMS licensing costs could easily eat up any other webprojects budget than the very large ones.
